Sadly, my trips to South Africa of late have been to visit an ageing, and frail mum, so of course all my time is devoted to being with her.  Found myself in London on the morning of Easter Friday, hastily searching for availability of flights to Durban.  Victim of the Easter Weekend surge in prices there was nothing for it but to grit the teeth and punch in the credit card details.  Air France Terminal 4, Heathrow a few hours later.

Another Easter Weekend concern was where to stay.  I have many great friends who will have me, but Easter is family time and there was no room at the Inn. Did I tell you that Booking.com is a close friend of mine?  I scoured some B and B options, all unappealing, and booked the first two nights at Redlands Hotel – well known but never stayed for the night.

timthumb.php I am still here.  A week later and beginning to feel like home.  Redlands Hotel lies in the heart of the city, well more like on the hill a five minute drive away from the city, surrounded by gorgeous homes and a divine Junior Prep school (I am biased, my son went there). The Hotel is part of Redlands Estate, with lush grounds and plenty of amenities, including a Spa and Hair Salon hop, skip and jump away.  I could go on about plenty of marketing points about the Hotel, all of which can be found on their website. http://www.redlandshotel.co.za

In truth, I seldom read reviews on Hotels, unless I have never been and Tripadvisor comes in handy. Everyone can lay on the charm. So what do I like about this place?  For starters, my room is great, in size and comfort.  A veranda with a view of the pool, enough to get anyone into that ‘I must swim and get healthy and all that mode.’  The view at night is even nicer with a glass of chilled Chenin and tinkling ice.  Peaceful and I need peaceful right now.

The staff.  Uplifting smiles and concern.  In the morning, and evening, lovely to come home to and nothing is too much to ask for.   Happy people, non intrusive, always helpful.

Location – ideal.

Could have wanted faster Internet and the coffee machine in the dining room is wanting but can get a decent one for extra. Like the morning paper, the menu but most of all, the opportunity to sit outside after a very hot day.

IMG_1556 That’s my room in the middle.  This place is perfect for any event, conference or a break before the Midlands excursions.  Happy to be here.

Sorry to hear about your ailing mum, Karen. Hope you’re having some time to relax, despite the family responsibilities. Sounds like you’ve found a great place to stay, at least. Enjoy the chilled Chenin. Cheers!

Thanks for the message. Tough times but at least the wine was wonderful. Mum and South Africa will always be special.
